Improving water quality in Saimaa

Finland, Puruvesi

Basic info

Hazard: Moderate lake water quality

Nature-based Solution: Sedimentation ponds; peak flow control structures; submerged dams; constructed wetlands; overland flow areas

How it started

Starting point: association

First approaches: researcher

Getting started: We are a local association that has been working on different environmental issues in our area for many years. We contacted Luke and FMI who came up with some ideas to improve the water quality of the lake.

Finding (Nature-based) Solutions

Selecting a solution: Together with Luke/FMI, we weighted different options that could be suitable for this area. The area is mostly private belonging to several forest owners. These were contacted by Luke to agree on potential solutions.

Assessing needs: We did not need much equipment. The monitoring sensors were provided by the Luke/FMI.

Co-creation – Finding collaborators

Collaboration: N/A

When:

Financial Support

Before: The financial support was taken care of by Luke & FMI.

After: The project is still ongoing, but we will need to find a way to get more funding in order to continue these activities. It is not possible to continue without further funding.

Beyond the project

After the project: The project is still ongoing.

Overall Experience: We as an association have some experience in these kinds of projects and know how to start the process and to get in contact with supporters.

Lessons Learnt: The time when the project ends, and we don’t have new funding possibilities will be difficult.

Best Practice: There are always groups around you who are taking action. Keep your eyes open!
